DIRECTIONS
The Park is in the southwestern part of the state in Natchez. Melrose is located at One Melrose-
Montebello Parkway off Sergeant Prentiss Drive (US Highways 61 and 84). The William Johnson House is in downtown Natchez at 210 State Street.
WHEN TO VISIT
Open year round. Peak visitor month is July. Spring and Fall are sunny and mild; Summer is hot and humid; Winter is mild with occasional freezing.
POINTS OF INTERES
European settlement of Natchez began with a French trading post in 1714. Control passed to
Spain in 1779 and to the United States in 1798. In the decades before the Civil War, Natchez
became a commercial, cultural, and social center of the South's "cotton belt," with power and
wealth unmatched by other southern towns of comparable size. The city of Natchez today
represents one of the best preserved concentrations of significant antebellum properties in the United States. Within the Park is Melrose, an excellent example of a planter's home.
